We have two yorkies and a lot of toads. Will this product hurt our dogs?
admin says
Robert,
No. Pest Rid uses food grade essential oils. Basically its nothing more than concentrated plant extracts and by design it won’t hurt or injure mammals or even targeted pests. And though reptiles, amphibians and several nuisance insects find the material bothersome, it won’t harm them.
Lastly, Pest Rid poses no danger to people or pets so it can be used safely around the home. In most cases the granules alone will take care of foraging toads; just apply it where you don’t want them to be and they’ll immediately leave. But in bad cases, using the Pest Rid spray over the top of the granules may be needed too.

Haven’t had any toads chirping since applying. It does stink initially but the smell dissipates quickly.
Linda says
If we put the repellent in one part of the attic, will the snake move to another part? We’re unable to reach or treat the entire attic. Would it be better for us to use a trap?? Thanks!
admin says
Linda,
If you read our SNAKE CONTROL article, you’ll learn that you shouldn’t use repellent in the home but instead, trap out what’s active. So in this case, either the Cahaba Snake Trap or a metal Live Trap would be the way to go.
Cahaba Snake Trap: https://bugspray.com/traps/cahaba-snake-trap-large-foldable.html
Snake Trap: https://bugspray.com/traps/cage/snake-trap-med-18-x-12-x-8
Bait either with Snake Lure too:
Snake Lure: https://bugspray.com/traps/lure/snake-lure-4-oz
Now once the snakes are trapped and relocated, applying some Snake Out or Pest Rid around the home to prevent more from coming inside would be okay.

Works wonders! Have not seen any of those lizards.
Linda says
It works! I had lots of moles, voles, and boreal toads digging holes around my trees and shrubs, damaging the root system. After using this product, the burrowing pests have moved on. Plus, the product is safe for use around pets.
James Holewka says
Frogs! Squirrels! Our neighbor has a abandoned pool which has led to heavy frog activity. This year they started to take over our yard too! Hundreds of them big and small. Bought both the dry pellets and spray and treated the mulch surrounding our back yard. That night the frogs are gone! It’s been two weeks so far still no frogs. We also have squirrels or a really big frog digging up our mulch, with this product they have seemed to stop also. Now the mulch in the front is being dug up, gotta order more! Very pleased with product and results!
Maggie says
While I am terrified of the toads/frogs in my yard, I do love the rabbits, chipmunks, and deer that visit. Will this product deter these animals as well?
admin says
Maggie,
In general no. Basically its not strong enough to have such a “blanket” effect.
But if there is specific bush or plant you spray with some of the liquid Pest Rid to deter frogs from landing on it or laying underneath it, there is a good chance rabbits or deer won’t eat the treated plant. But the treatments won’t keep them out of the yard as much as they “may” repel them from treated plants. And this only seems to happen with the liquid spray, not the granules.

My window wells on my house fill up with 1,000s of salamanders. Will this product work to repel them? Can I use it in my window wells and around the outside edge of the window wells?
admin says
Paul,
Based on the numbers you’re talking about, I would suggest you do more than just apply Pest Rid granules to the window wells.
First, do you know where they might be entering your property? So if you think they might be migrating from one side of the land because there is a pond or stream or some other site where they might be originating, you’ll want to put up a barrier between that land and your property. Do this by setting out the granules and then spraying over the top with the liquid spray.
Next, be sure to use the granules all the way around the home, not just in the window wells.
Lastly, spray over the top of the granules and on the foundation as well with the Pest Rid spray.
One jar of granules can treat up to 500 linear feet but you will want to apply more in the wells since they seem to harbor so many. Maybe 2-3 times as much as what it might normally need.

Really works! It’s been two weeks and I only seen one toad after a heavy night of rain and it did not stay. I have almost 3 acres and used it around my home and walk way. Before using pest rid I had many holes and in my fenced area and toad around my home and walk way. I was worried about my dog getting a hold of one. I was doing salt, coffee grounds, rocks in holes and would of done a toad dance if I thought it would get rid of them. I am so amazed how fast and long Pest Rid has worked. I will be using it again in another week and if it keeps the toads away again and for a longer time, I will order more. Right now this is the only product that has worked.
Michael McTiernan says
So far, so good! I was tired of having to clean lizard droppings off my pool deck, as we have fairly large lizards in my backyard. I put down the granules on Saturday around the edge of my pool deck. So far, I have not seen 1 lizard sun bathing on the pavers, which I usually see daily. I am interested to see how long this lasts – as long as it gets them away for a few weeks at least, I will be a happy repeat customer.
Karen says
Will this product work to deter mourning doves?
Tech Support says
Karen,
Yes and no. If you read the way this product works, you’ll understand it needs to be applied in conjunction with the Pest Rid Spray. Essentially the granules are designed to “enhance” the performance of the liquid spray. So when used first and then sprayed with the liquid, you’ll get 4-8 weeks of protection compared to just spraying which typically lasts 3-4 weeks. But using the granules by themselves, without the spray, won’t work.
Now if you only want to use one form, go with the liquid spray seen here:
Pest Rid Spray: https://bugspray.com/exempt/liquid/pest-rid-exempt-liquid-repellent
But for birds like doves, we have found putting the down the granules first and spraying over the top is by far the best approach.

Irie says
I applied the Pest Rid Granules on top of the mulch around my shrubs and flower beds in the morning and it rained later in the afternoon. Will this rainfall affect the effectiveness of this product?
Tech Support says
Irie,
If you read the product details above, you’ll see we have a line about the impact of “wet” conditions. In general, “average” rainfall will not impact the product. If anything, it will keep is “fresh” and active. But anything excessive will no doubt take away from the overall residual duration normally enjoyed by a single treatment. The flip side of this is that during any kind of drought, treatments will last longer than normal.
More important than the impact of rain is that in order for the granules to be effective, you must be spraying over them with the Pest Rid Spray. Remember, the granules act as a “sponge” allowing the liquid to last that much longer and must be used in conjunction with the spray to get the proper performance and expected length of protection afield.
Give us a call if you still have questions.

We have an above ground spa where tiny frogs love to go under the cover. Nothing is worse than having to shew these away (sometimes up to 20 frogs), upon getting in. Or, fetching a dead one out. If I sprinkle the granules around the base of the spa and spray the sides of the spa with the liquid form, will it deter frogs from going under the cover? Thank you, in advance for answering my question.
Tech Support says
Lanette,
You are spot on correct with what you want to do. Apply the granules around the spa and then spray them as well as the sides of the spa to keep the frogs away. The only other thing to consider is treating other areas around the deck/patio where they might be coming from as this will add to the overall performance and longevity of the treatment.

Kirsten says
It works so far… So far I’ve seen real improvement but I think its best to use it the night before you’re going out to the yard. I don’t see it lasting a month or 2. I don’t think the smell is too bad. Cinammon mixed with garlic is what it smells like but its not overwhelming. The toads do try and go to any little crevice I don’t spray or drop granules around. I also don’t think its rainproof, but as long as I can control it to a minimum by using this stuff, I’ll continue to use it. Its better than feeling helpless. I saw and heard improvement next day after use. I had to reapply 1 week later. I’m cool with that.
Tech Support says
@Kirsten: Thanks for the feedback! And here’s a followup to a couple of your concerns mentioned in your post.
First, the active is subtle and though you may notice it fade after a week or two, targeted pests like toads will continue to detect it plenty strong. Their senses are stronger and the impact it has on them is extremely more profound so they way more sensitive to it compared to people. So even as it weakens, it will still work fine. This is why treatments can last several weeks. Now true, there will be certain areas around the home where you can only use the spray and the spray may only last 1-2 weeks so be aware of those areas and keep them treated.
Second, in the yard where you can apply the granules, be sure to spray them too. This will “embed” the Pest Rid scent effectively magnifying it so much that will linger for 6+ weeks. So in areas where granules are spread and sprayed, treatments should last a lot longer compared to just the spray alone.
On my home, I have tree frogs which like to roost on my porch support columns. I can’t use the granules on them but I can spray them and I seem to get 3-4 weeks of protection per treatment so it is doing well in that environment which is also sheltered a bit from direct rain. But on my deck treatments only last 2-3 weeks as that area is getting direct rain and its definitely reducing the length of time it remains active.

Easy to use and Effective.
Items arrived on time in good condition. Application was easy. I applied the product on known areas where lizards were chillin’. They avoided the area and started colonizing other areas that I didn’t care if they colonized.
I’m not against wildlife but I got tired of hearing shriek’s of terror and observing jumps of fear on sighting a lizard.
The sprayer was handy but I poured the contents into a pump action sprayer for ease of use.

Will the granules and spray affect the taste of vegetables in my garden? Or should I put them outside of the raised beds? Between squirrels and marmots my garden is getting stripped of tomatoes, lima beans, green beans, lettuce and peas!!!
Thank you!
Tech Support says
For these animals around gardens, you’ll be best served using NBS. Mix 3 oz per gallon and spray around the veggie garden. Apply a “swath”, basically a 3 foot wide spray directly on the ground. Be sure to spray all fencing and right up to a foot away from the plants. Way more effective around other plants for these animals compared to Pest Rid.

Will this work for mice and little green frogs in a vehicle? The frogs are in the door jams. What would be the best way to apply it? The mice are all over the vehicle.
Tech Support says
Margaret,
.
So first, the “granules” would not work. They’re for the ground and designed to “retain” the liquid form of Pest Rid so it lingers longer. In this case, the liquid form has been used on car door jams quite effectively so for sure it will get the frogs to leave.

But the mice; thats a different story. You’ll need to do some trapping and then some repelling as our online posts detail here:

.
Once they’re all trapped out, get at least our “under the hood” sound repeller installed. Details on that item are here:

Rob says
A marmot is using an outdoor couch as a latrine (climbing between the couch cover and cushions) when we are away. Will the pellets and spray around the patio deter the marmot?
Tech Support says
Rob,
It might. As we see it, you have two options for treating and then a third one that could solve the matter once the offending animals aren’t active.
So the first would be to go for a treatment of Granules applied “around” the couch and over the ground around it. The goal here would be to create a type of “fence” or line between the couch and where the marmot is coming from. In theory, if this “swath” of granules is 3 feet wide and then sprayed with Pest Away over the top, it should stop him from foraging over the area and in turn, not come back.
That said, once this starts to happen, that location will often become a place that attracts if not that specific marmot, others in the area. This can happen because their feces and urine are used for scenting their “territory” and so if there are others around the area others will likely come around to smell what’s been there and to “see” what’s been going on around the couch. To end that pattern, use the T.O.N.
Total Odor Neutralizer is designed to defeat any scent left by animals or insects and by removing this scent, it becomes very likely no new ones will come around or even know to investigate. Oh, and often times the one main animal coming now will “forget” his “trail” and stop coming. These animals very much rely on smell as the way to know where to go and thus removing any scent will often times remedy the issue.
Lastly, worth noting is that these products do have an odor and if the couch is being used by people, treating alongside it or on it will most likely smell the treatments. They’r aren’t dangerous but they are persistent. For example, the granules are a strong wintergreen smell but there are other oils that are odorous as well.
For this reason the second treatment might be the best solution. This would be to install our Sound Repeller. If you were to first diffuse any smell by using T.O.N. and then installing a sound repeller? You would most certainly have instant success. And the unit would be a permanent solution meaning you won’t have to retreat every month or two. Basically you’d just set up the repeller and let it do its job of keeping it away.
