do I have to use these if I bait out in the yard? I have had all kinds of varmits in my yard so I just toss the bait out and they take it in a day or two. I know the stations will help protect the bait from rain but mine doesn’t last long enough to be affected.

JD,
You need to use stations and specifically, Tamperproof stations. There are many reasons but here’s the short list.
First and foremost, the rodenticide’s we know all have labels that require tamperproof stations. This is to prevent the accidental poisoning of non-target wildlife like raccoon, opossum and squirrels not to mention dogs or children. One of the most common causes of all pesticide poisonings is related to the accidental consumption of rodenticide and in most all cases, its because the placements were not secure.
Second, due to the large impact rogue bait placements have had on wildlife, the EPA has put into effect many restrictions to help curb this type of use. At this time it’s hard to find small amounts of rodenticide and that which can be purchased in small quantities is almost always safely inside a tamperproof, disposable bait station. This will help reduce accidental poisonings but also force the user to be more efficient with their placements.
Third, although large animals may not die from ingesting some, they will eat it. And they can eat a lot. We can’t tell you how many hundreds of stories we’ve heard from customers over the years confirming this had been happening on their property. Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s, we would have customers buying 1-2 lbs of bait and a few days later be back for more. After asking a few questions, they would start to pay more attention to what they were doing and sure enough, they would come back and report that some large animal was carting off their bait. In all cases where they started using the stations, they reported a huge decrease in the amount of bait needed BUT reported better results. The stations were effectively helping them to target the right animals!
Fourth, rodents love to hoard bait. If you place it out loose, they can collect and store it. Conversely, our bait stations have “rods” inside that hold the bait inside. This forces target animals to carefully chew off only what they eat. This in turn eliminates the costly loss of the bait not to mention the hoarding of bait which can lead to accidental poisonings.
Fifth, tamperproof stations are designed to accommodate small rodents like mice and rats. This helps restrict what can find the bait but they also help these same animals be more likely to eat it. In other words, the stations help get the results you want!
We can go on but the point is it’s irresponsible to throw rodenticide out in the yard even if you don’t expect to have children or pets around. Its most likely unlawful, at least based on the baits we know, and its very wasteful not to mention ineffective. A properly installed bait station with bait and/or a snap trap inside will work 10 times better AND only target the right animals.
