My daughter has a horse that is very allergic to certain bug bites. He suffers mightily during the summer in Ohio. She has been buying off-the-shelf DEET products and mixing it with his regular equine fly spray, the only mix that works, but it’s an outrageously expensive method. Is bulk 100% DEET available in pint, quart, or gallon size?
Deet is costly and generally not available in any kind of bulk packaging because it’s not designed to be used on people or pets to such a large degree. And since there are so many alternative options that work better, cost less and are “safer” for use on animals, I suggest you consider one of the following alternatives.
For starters, PERMETHRIN is one of the most commonly used concentrates used on horses. Its safe for use directly on them by either spraying or wiping them down. And you’ll find it treatments will last longer (several days at least) and will actually kill flying pests that choose to land on treated animals.
Another option is ESSENTRIA IC. This concentrate is made with food grade actives and can be directly applied to horses making it a great alternative to deet. Plus it works better and costs a lot less to apply.
Something else you should consider doing which will really help the problem is to start fogging the areas where your horse spends its time. We sell a wide range of fogging machines and have helped many equestrians keep their horses happy and fly free by using our equipment and products.
Basically all that’s involved is to fog the barn, stables, grassy areas etc. with either the Permethrin or Essentria mentioned above. Both are safe for use in these areas, will control everything from gnats to biting flies to mosquitoes and both are cost effective to apply compared to deet.
And by treating the problem directly (the source of the pests), you’ll find a lot less activity on your horse and as a result, end up having to use a lot less chemical on them which is ultimately the best for your horses long term well being.
