I have an ongoing issue with snapping turtles. They come into my yard from one side and bit my dog. You’d think she’d learn but every time she sees one she can’t help but get close and keeps getting bit on her snout. Is there some way I can keep them away short of shooting them?
Snapping turtles have long been a protected species and killing them could be breaking a local law if not something at the federal level. But they also pack a strong bite and for some reason, dogs often times don’t seem to figure out they pose a real hazard if you get too close. True, they’re not super fast. But once they lock onto their target, it can be tough to get that jaw dislodged!
To keep them out of the yard, we have a food grade repellent that can be spread along the border where they enter. PEST RID GRANULES should be applied along this area at the rate of 1 lb per 250 linear feet. By itself it won’t help but once in place, you’ll need to spray over the top with PEST AWAY.
The granules won’t harm anything but after they’re sprayed, the odor of the repellent will keep away reptiles like lizards, snakes and turtles. Our 2 lb jar will cover up to 500 linear feet and should be renewed every 60-90 days.
After applying the granules, spray over the top with Pest Away spray. The liquid will then saturate the granules and “lock in” giving them a good 30-60 days residual. Using the liquid by itself will work too but for turtles, you’ll need to reapply it every 30 days if you don’t use the granules too.
Pest Away comes on 8 oz Jars and makes 4 gallons per jug. 1 gallon of mixed product will treat about 800 sq/ft.
If you get the gallon jug, you’ll need a good PUMP SPRAYER to make the applications.
