A local woodpecker has working a tree in my yard and finally killed it. It split apart last week so I cut it down this weekend. Now he’s after another tree! How can I stop him? I don’t want to loose anymore.
Looks like classic yellowed belly sapsucker damage. Could also be red-naped sapsuckers depending on your region. We have a few species here in the states that cause this exact damage.
Basically these woodpeckers will target sap rich trees and uniformly peck around the trunk. Trees can withstand attacks for 1-2 years but if it goes long enough, there will be significant sap loss resulting in tree death. Also, trees growing at an angle will loose sap faster. This can lead to faster mortality.
To stop them from pecking, spray trees you want to protect with PEST AWAY. It can be used as often as is needed but in general, spraying every 1-2 months will cause them to leave. And usually after 1 treatment they’ll stay off the treated tree for good.
Now true, they might come back 6-12 months later. But as long as you renew the application when they return, it will keep them away and help save your tree.
You can also install one of our BIRD FLASHERS where its active. These work very well and will immediately end the attacks. One can cover up to 1,000 sq/ft and will protect several trees as long as the birds can see them.
They come with the needed hardware so all you have to is screw them into the tree.
