I have a large room above my 3 car garage. Around the middle of October each year, we have hundreds of ladybugs on the windows, ceiling and walls. I vacuum them up, but I have to do that for about a week or two every other day. What would be the best trap to use in this case? And can I stop this from happening every year? Thank you.
Ladybugs will be flocking to homes this time of year based on the pheromones they leave for this very reason. Ladybugs live for several years and when trees drop their leaves, they’ll need a new place to live during the cold of the winter. Once a home has been targeted and used for 10-2 years, it will tend to get targeted every fall thereafter. This activity and more details on how to control them are covered in our LADYBUG ARTICLE.
In your case, setting up our LIGHTED LADYBUG TRAP will help collect them in any room. Keep the trap on when its dark and make sure no other lights are from midnight to daybreak and you should be able to collect any out and about with our trap.
Ultimately, stopping them from using your home is the best way to control the problem. This can be done by spraying the homes exterior with MAXXTHOR EC listed in our article. Mix 1/2 oz per gallon of water and spray all the siding they’re using. In most cases, this will be at least 1-2 sides of the home but treating the whole house may be required.
To treat the average home will take 2-3 gallons of mixed solution and it will usually take 2-3 applications spaced 1 week apart. Maxxthor will work immediately when first sprayed meaning any active will drop dead within an hour. But after it dries, it will take a day to work when more return. This means if you see them active the next day, don’t panic. If you applied enough, they’ll all die too. That said, if you see them active two days after you sprayed, spray again. Repeat this sequence until you don’t see any and then if you go 7 days without anymore coming around, you could be done for this fall. But if it warms again, be prepared to spray at least one more time.
