Horse pastures have very bad gnat problem, mostly close to gate areas. How can I control these areas for gnats so horses are not covered in them (swarm all over horses)? And we do not have them covering us when we go to get horses or let them out. I use fly sprays on horses but this does not control the gnat problem.
This is an easy one. The first key is to understand the only way to control gnats over a wide open area like you have is to treat with a “fog”. The second is understanding that you’ll need to treat often. Sometimes twice a week. Now this might not be forever but at least until the problem is resolved.
Now once the gnats are gone and you have broken their life cycle, you might be able to wait 1-2 weeks in between treatments. But since we can’t effectively kill gnat eggs and gnat pupae, it will take more frequent applications initially until they’re under control.
Another thing to consider is that because you’ll be treating often, its important to use something that will be safe for the horses, people and other animals. And the best product for such a use is ESSENTRIA IC. Made from plant essential oils, Essentria is federally exempt because its so safe to use around people and animals. Its even labeled for use directly on horses because its very effective on biting and flying pests yet safe enough to apply to them directly.
Essentria is also cost effective. You’ll only need to use 4 oz per gallon of water and a mixed gallon will be able to cover 10,000-15,000 well. To apply the mixture, you’ll need one of our foggers.
For small areas, we have several electric models that are easy to use and effective. The MINI FOGGER is good if you only have a couple of places to treat. But since its limited to a 32 oz holding tank, this model won’t be adequate for large jobs so we only recommend it for areas 5,000 sq/ft or less.
Now if you have 10,000-20,000 sq/ft to treat (1/4 to 1/2 acre), the FM6208 has a full 1 gallon holding tank and will prove efficient and effective.
Lastly, if you have several areas to treat and they’re spread out over a large area, consider getting a BACK PACK MIST BLOWER. This unit is gas powered, fits on your back and is completely portable. Its very powerful and will apply 2-3 gallons of material per acre in as little as 6-8 minutes of treating (per acre).
