Raccoons are nocturnal animals and reside where wooded lots are available for nests. Because their natural predators are nonexistent in cities or metropolitan suburbs, raccoons have populated excessively. This has led to more of them carrying the rabies virus. In fact, raccoons are the most likely carrier of this virus in many states across America.

Besides posing a health threat to pets and humans, they love to tear apart garbage and pilfer gardens. They love to dig in yards and have been known to uproot sod and grass in search of tasty grubs and insects. Raccoons will readily take advantage of fish and turtles kept in small ponds as well as pet birds. Many times dogs and cats are blamed for making a mess of garbage when in fact the culprit is a raccoon. If a raccoon has been active on or around your home, it is only a matter of time before they figure out how to get into your attic or crawl space.

RACCOON SOUND REPELLER

If you have raccoons raiding your koi pond, digging in the yard or messing with your garbage, set up our SOUND REPELLER. This machine uses ultra sound by default to chase small animals but for raccoons, you’ll want to use the “audible” sound. This sound you control which can be dialed up as high as 100 db (or totally off). The sound released is combination of prey birds and sirens that will scare raccoon instantly when activated.

Refer to our product page for complete device details since it has many options. Here is a quick summary of why this unit is a good option and well suited for certain animals like raccoons.

  1. It has an “audible” sound most any alpha animal does not like so they avoid it.
  2. It has a wireless remote control so you can turn it off/on as needed from afar.
  3. It has a day time only, night time only or 24 hour a day setting so you can have it active when needed. For raccoons, it should be turned to operate during at night.
  4. It has the optional motion activated setting you’ll want to use so it only goes on when needed.
  5. It includes an AC power supply so if you can run it by plugging it into a power outlet.
  6. It can also be powered by batteries which can last several months.

Our sound repeller can be used to keep raccoons out of the yard. Plan on using one machine per 4,000 sq/ft of area. And since it will only impact animals in front of the device, you need to make sure you have a clear unobstructed view of the area you want to protect when setting up the machine. This usually means keeping it 1-2 feet off the ground.

Units should be placed 1-2 feet above ground and pointed in the direction where animals are entering as well as “over” the turf you want to protect.

For easy installation, MOUNTING BLOCKS are handy. They can accept 1 or 2 repellers (picture to the right) and have a 1/2″ hole on their bottom so they will easily fit over a 1/2″ piece of rebar or any other wood or plastic stake. Ultra Sound Repellers will work fine by themselves as long as you have a good place to set them up. But we highly recommend getting the Units with Mounting Blocks in the kits we offer. Mounting Blocks allow you to place units anywhere and they will save time too.

RACCOONS IN THE HOME

Raccoon will regularly move into attics, crawl spaces or other parts of the home seeking shelter. They will learn to climb up down spouts, cedar siding and other types of home construction leading to them into attics and other voids of the structure.

DON’T SEAL OFF ANY ENTRANCE HOLE UNTIL YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TRAPPED OUT ALL ANIMALS USING THAT SPACE.

If you try sealing holes without first removing the residing animal you are only asking for trouble. You may trap the animal or it’s young inside which would make a very angry and dangerous adult. If you know some raccoon who are residing somewhere in or around your home and you need to trap them out, we have several trapping options which are all proven and effective.

RACCOON LIVE TRAPPING

For small raccoon, use our LT111230 live trap. It is long enough to catch most raccoon. Trap placement only needs to be done alongside the path the target animal is using. This could be at the base of a tree it is climbing, on the roof, against the foundation wall, under a deck, on a deck, in a crawl space or even in the attic. It is best to place something heavy like a Cement Block on top of the trap to make it stable. Raccoon have been known to flip traps over attempting to get the food or lure inside. If using the trap inside, nailing it to rafters or planking works well to stabilize it from movement; heavy objects placed on top are easier to install on the outside and will work just as well.

RACCOON TRAP BAIT

Use either our LOGANBERRY PASTE or our SALMON PASTE as lure. Loganberry works well if you have found your targeted animal feeding on fruit, vegetables or other plants. Salmon Paste is the preferred lure if you don’t know what they want or if you have seen them feeding on meat or fish. Of course, if the target animal has been digging up your yard in search of grubs, get some of our GRUB BAIT. Raccoon love it.

RACCOON ODOR CONTROL

If the animal dies in the home, the dead body odor will be strong throughout the house and will last for several weeks to months depending on the size of the animal which died. Ideally, removing the body will speed up the process of eliminating the odor but this is not always possible.

The best agent to get rid of the dead body odor, feces and urine smell is T.O.N.

Add 4-6 oz of concentrate to 1 gallon of water and plan on getting about 5,00 sq/ft per mixed gallon when sprayed, up to 1000 sq/ft when fogged. Spraying or fogging the crawl space would be the place to start but we suggest you wipe down, mop, spray or fog the rest of the home too.

To apply T.O.N., you can use a good PUMP SPRAYERS. These will apply the material in a spray form and with our adjustable nozzles you are sure to get coverage. If you have a large crawl space or attic to treat and cannot access areas where the raccoons were active, use our BUGSPRAY FOGGER. This device creates a mist or fog which will float around treated rooms and voids. The fog will penetrate all areas insuring good coverage and odor elimination. It is a great help for those hard to treat attics and crawl spaces that no one wants to enter.

In most cases based on where the odor is usually focused, a good fogging machine will do a more thorough job. Plus it will save time and be a lot less messy making the job easy.

Our BUGSPRAY FOGGER is ideal for the task.

The following “short video” (less than 60 seconds) gives the brief summary of how this fogger works.

YouTube Video

As you can see in the video, this fogger will propel the mist out 20-30 feet so hard to access spaces like attics or crawl spaces will be easy to treat.

I have squirrels, raccoons and opossums occasionally getting on my roof via climbing gutters. Is there a device available that you can attach to a gutter to block them?

All three of these animals are very determined and skilled so they’ll easily bypass any attempt to block them with nothing more than a physical barrier. That being said, it just so happens all three also hate Ultra Sound. On top of that, we actually have one Ultra Sound unit which works well at repelling all three animals.

Known as the Yard Gard, this device is discussed in the article above and can be deployed pointing to the area where the animals are active and not wanted. Though you can set it to activate when it detects motion, we recommend setting it to “always on” for the first week or two. This way no invading animal will be missed. Once you find the area animal free with no activity for at least a week, you can adjust the setting to motion activation.

Now remember it’s important to get complete coverage when using Ultra Sound because targeted animals will avoid the sound if possible and sneak around it. That means it usually takes a couple of units to get the area properly protected.

We had Raccoon in our attic for about a month. We have gotten it out and closed the hole on the roof. Now the question is about the urine or feces left behind. Is it sufficient to use QUICK ACTION on it? or do we have to go through a complete clean up and removal of the insulation?

That’s tough to answer with any certainty. I say this because it’s not clear how much of the insulation is contaminated, destroyed or otherwise “unsavable”. But here’s what I suggest.

If the insulation is still in good shape and there isn’t much of waste throughout the area (less than a bucketful), I’d say you could try saving it. Remember, the insulation is there to insulate and if most of it is still present and hasn’t been removed or matted down to any noticeable degree, it should be able to function fine and do it’s job. True, it could have an odor issue but if you mist our T.O.N.,, you should be able to neutralize the odor.

      Total Odor Neutralizer: https://bugspray.com/sanitizer/liquid/total-odor-neutralizer

Now if the insulation has suffered massive loss or deterioration, replacing it would probably make sense. True this will cost more in the short run but remember, having insulation that is working right means you’ll no doubt save more $ over time compared to the cost of getting it installed. And if there is a lot of fecal matter up there visible (like two or more bucketfuls), then I would say replacing it would be in order. But this would not solve the odor issue.

So to deal with the odor, you would still want to mist with T.O.N. once the insulation is removed. In other words, remove the old insulation and then treat the open area making sure to get some of the mist over the rafters, decking, and all exposed wood beams you see. Once treated, let it sit for a day and then mist it again before the new insulation is installed.

      Hope this helps!
