Is there a paint additive that I can add to keep my home free from crawling insects?
Yes. It can be mixed with paint or stain and won’t affect the finish so essentially you don’t do anything different to use it. Basically you’ll just paint or stain like normal after it’s added and you won’t even know it’s there but the bugs will. From that point on the paint or stain will repel most any insect for at least 6-12 months. And when it depreciates and you start noticing insects coming back, you can mix some of it up with water and spray over the paint or stain. This product is known as NBS PAINT ADDITIVE and can be seen here:

Lynette Hauptman says
Can the insect repellant NBS be used to add to paint for the inside of the home?
Tech Support says
It can. However, it’s main purpose is to be used outside where it will repel insects and keep them from getting inside.
Now if you use it inside, only painted surfaces will repel bugs but as you well know, this won’t help insects that amass on the floor, furniture, etc so in the end, if you’re allowing insects to enter the home because you’re not treating outside, I’m afraid the NBS won’t help much when used inside only.
And if you have a pest problem like roaches, carpet beetles or some other “inside” pest, they will no doubt stay off of paint that’s got NBS in it but since there are so many other places for them to nest, they’ll probably just end up living in other areas of the home.

Will it also repel scorpions?
Tech Support says
Yes. We have two repellents that can be used to deter Scorpions. The first approach is to use the NBS added to paint or stain.

The second is the Pest Rid. Made from natural ingredients, Pest Rid has been found to repel a wide range of insect and animal pests and can be be sprayed over the NBS treated paint or stain. When using both, you should be able to keep most any pest off the home and away from the treated areas.

Need to get rid of indian skinks out side. They are not in the home but doing damage to plants in the yard. How do I treat?
Tech Support says
Review our Lizard control article for all the options we have listed. As you’ll see, we have a lot of product options that can be employed. The strongest most overall effective approach is to take away skink food by treating with one of the insecticides we have listed. Using this approach will cause them to relocate seeking food elsewhere.
But if you prefer to just repel the insects and skinks, there are a few options that can accomplish this task too. You’ll just need to apply these treatments more frequently but these repellent work well for both insects and skinks.

Kevin Evans says
Can NBS Paint Repellent be used over existing paint (the house is only 8 months old) to repel blind mosquitoes?
They seem to breed in the lake behind the house and breed about 8 months of the year around the soffit and top of the painted CBS exterior walls.
Thanks,
Kevin
Tech Support says
Absolutely. As explained in the post above (answer to the original question), NBS is best utilized by adding it to stain or paint. When used this way, one can expect insect repellency for a year or more.
But once it wears off, you can renew it’s properties by mixing some with water (3.2 oz per gallon of water) and spraying it out with a traditional pump sprayer on your homes exterior (as well as any plants in the yard). Apply 1 gallon of mixed material per 800 sq/ft of area. Unfortunately the residual might only last a month or two but still, it will work at repelling flying insects like blind mosquitoes.
Now if you find this approach isn’t working long enough to your liking, consider trying some Onslaught instead. This is a “time released” concentrate which can last 6-12 months per treatment. And Onslaught will both kill and repel nuisance pests so it’s no doubt a “stronger” option.

Can this be used in the acrylic emulsion paint? If yes, in what percentage? And for how long can I expect mosquito repellency?
Tech Support says
Nilesh,
I just checked with the manufacturer and they said no problem. They added that if anything changes, it would be that the paint might take slightly longer to dry. But the NBS will definitely work fine in this formulation as long as you’re treating everything and not just trim or spot painting. In other words, don’t use the NBS for a partial paint job. As always, the best results can only be obtained when using it for the main paint, trim, etc.
As for the expected length of insect repellency; 1 year or more.
Lastly, nothing changes regarding the mixture rate which is 1 pint of NBS per 5 gallons of paint (as listed above).

Is there a concrete paint that would have an additive or can you put additive into concrete paint for bug control? Especially dealing with ants from Palm trees – gotta get rid the Palm trees and maybe these big red ants (carpenter) would get eliminated? :-/ Help! =o
Tech Support says
Jennifer,
Two options. But before I list them, its important to understand that with certain pests, killing the main nest is many times critical for success. And ants are one of those pests. So even though we have a product called NBS that is used in paint or stain to repel pests, I’m afraid it won’t be strong enough to handle the problem. I say this because I know it works fine on the occasional ant (or any insect) that forages onto a home treated with NBS. But if you know where they’re coming from and if the problem is significant, the best way to proceed is to kill the nest.
So the repellent we have called NBS is used by adding a pint to a 5 gallon pail of paint or stain. And it will work fine in your concrete paint. Typically treatments will last 1 year or more. You can read up on it here:
NBS Repellent: https://bugspray.com/exempt/additive/nbs-paint-additive-16-oz
But will this be enough? I’m thinking no.
The good news is since you seem to know where the ants are nesting, why not treat them directly? The treatment process would be simple because I’ve done it before and have enjoyed great success. Now I haven’t treated them in Palm trees but I have done so in oaks, maples, beech and hickory to name a few. And its so easy because basically all you have to do is spray the trunk of the tree once a week until you don’t see any ants. In my experience, it takes 2 treatments and by the end of the second week, the ants are all dead and the nests gone.
The secret to the success is to use a product we carry called Termidor. Most commonly used for ants and termites, the active in Termidor is undetectable by insects. They’ll readily walk over the treatment. During this time they’ll be picking up trace amounts which they then “share” with other members of their colony. Termidor takes 2-4 days to kick in and “kill” target pests but when it does, the net effect is that it will many times kill the whole colony and solve the problem – even when the nest is located on the top a palm tree.
To use Termidor for this problem, you’ll want to spray the trunks of the palm trees from 6 feet off the ground all the way down to the base of the tree. By treating all the way around trunk, you’re covering the areas they’re walking on which in turn will cause them to walk over the treatment. 7 days after the initial treatment, spray again and by the end of 14 days, the ant activity should cease.
Use the Termidor anywhere you see them trailing by treating their trails every 7 days and you should be able to control them anywhere on the property.

Trish Ditta says
We have a bad problem with spiders on top and bottom of our boat dock. The water is down and we want to clean the spiders out from underneath and reseal the bottom. Is there anything we can add to the sealer and if so how long will it last?
Tech Support says
Trish,
The product above can be added to stain, paint, sealants, etc. and in general, will yield a year or more of insect repellency. In general, most people use it out in the open where sun and rain will adversely affect the treatment. Now under a dock could last longer but if I was to guess, I’d say it will yield about the same kind of results because the dock will be close to water and being that close will probably affect it. So to answer your question; use the NBS above at the rate of 1 pint per 5 gallons of sealant and you should get decent repellency. If not 6 months, maybe up to a year. And of course, using it a stronger rate would be fine too.
