bat eradication

August 18, 2014 By Tech Support Leave a Comment

Hi – We have about 30-60 bats (counted 30 exiting one night) in our chimney. They are entering under the flashing at the top of the chimney, which is attached to our two story house. Read through your information on bats and bought one of your outdoor ultrasound devices. Would you have any suggestions on a game plan? While I checked the outside of the house and don’t see any other entry points, I am considering buying a total of four devices and putting one on each side of the house. Bats are leaving the chimney around 9:00 pm, so I’m considering turning it on around 10:00 pm. The site noted that all bats don’t leave at the same time. Would you have a projection on the number of days that it would take until they are all gone? Perhaps four or five days? Once we’ve had the device on for seven days, would it be a good time to clean out the guano from the chimney or would you recommend waiting? It looks like the bats are nesting inside the brick and outside the chimney, not actually inside the chimney. Any other chemicals or devices that might come in useful? Thanks!

Here’s what you need to do.

First, drape some NETTING over the entire chimney cap so it droops down over the chimney and falls below the area you see them using. You’ll want to wrap the bottom of it snug to the chimney but loose enough so any bats inside will be able to come out and escape. But it needs to be tight enough so that when they return, they won’t be able to get back in.

And you should install the netting after they leave for the evening. Now true, there might be a few bats still inside. But after a few days they’ll figure out they need to leave too and if you install the netting properly, they’ll be able to exit safely.

Now obviously you don’t want to keep the netting up all the time. But assuming you’re not using the chimney now, it should be okay to proceed to fix the issue.

Next, get as much of the guano removed and then apply NNZ to any surfaces where the droppings were accumulating. You can apply it as a liquid or a foam using our FOAMING TOOL. Just be sure to get all surfaces treated where any droppings were resting or touching. NNZ works great at neutralizing odors like bat guano and this will be important for long term control of the problem.

Next, once you know the bats are gone and the odor issue is resolved, seal the gaps they were using with COPPER WOOL. This product will last forever and is easy to use.

Lastly, deploying several YARD GARDS pointing up at the chimney and as much of the surrounding area as possible. Remember, bats use “scent” to locate good roost sites and at this point your home has been marked as a good location to live. So your goal now is to first expel the roosting bats and then second, to remove as much of their scent using the NNZ so other bats in the neighborhood won’t find your home as easily.

Now once the NNZ has been used, the Yard Gards can be installed so they are covering as much of the roof line perimeter as possible. In other words, don’t think about protecting just the chimney. Its important that you try to blanket as much of the homes roof line with sound since there is a good chance bats will simply find another gap on the home where they can roost now that they know about the location.
