They pretty much destroyed all my tomatoes, especially the cherry, this summer. I just pulled all the tomato plants out of my garden. What can I do this fall/winter to stop them from coming back next spring? I will try the spray in the spring. I live in coastal North Carolina. Thanks.
If you read our leaf footed bug article, you’ll learn that you need to treat in the fall and then again in the spring if you want to get rid of them. During the summer, they drop eggs which hatch in the ground and on plants. So as summer turns to fall, these eggs are hatching and its important to kill the larvae now, before they pupate, to stop their cycle.

Then next spring you should spray the ground again to get any hatching pupae that over wintered and survived the spray.
Lastly, you’ll need to spray your plants during the summer to protect them from getting reinfested. You see, even if you kill the ones reproducing in your yard, the new plants you grow next year will attract more leaf footed bugs to the area so spraying anything you grow is the best way to keep them protected.
We have two options that can be applied for this pest. The first is approved for organic gardening so it would be considered to be the “safest” option. Treatments will last 7 days and you’ll need to treat at least twice this year focusing your attention on the ground of the garden.
Organic Insect Killer: https://bugspray.com/organic/liquid/multi-purpose-insect-killer-24-oz
The second option is a stronger product that will last a month per application. You’ll need to use this active once this fall to get a good treatment in place.
Vegetables Plus Perm: https://bugspray.com/catalog/insecticide/liquid/veg-plus-10-perm
Now come next spring, treat the ground again before you plant and then once the garden is in place, treat the plants during the summer to provide the best protection possible.
