Something has been eating our wiring harnesses in both cars. We have never had problems like this before, even tho’ we have lived out in the country for 30+ years. Someone saw a porcupine when hunting….could that be the culprit? We have the usual skunks, racoons, groundhogs, squirrels, etc. no problems until now.
There are many animals that will routinely chew on auto wiring. The short list includes roof rats, chipmunks, mice and shrews.
Porcupines have been known to chew on cars too but in the cases we know about, its been the tires they target.
Rats, chipmunks and mice seem to chew on most any wire or hose commonly used in cars. We’re not sure if its the rubber, the fluid inside the hoses, the insulation inside the wires or just the need to grind their teeth leading to the behavior. Regardless, its easy to stop.
The first approach is to spray the wiring with PEST RID spray. It uses food grade actives animals don’t like and they’ll stay away from where its been applied. Treat once a month to keep the treatment fresh.

For a more permanent solution, install 1-2 USD YARD GARDS. For two cars you’ll need two units. Set them at ground level about 10-15 feet away from the front or back end of the car. Point them directly at the cars so their sound can transmit underneath the vehicles. Keep them on 24/7 by using the included AC adaptor. This will keep any animal away as long as the units are powered on and running. Since it will only cost $.25-.50 a month to run and they’re easy to install, this is a relatively quick and effective fix.

Lastly, setting up some live traps baited with PECAN SURPRISE will catch any of the small animals that might be chewing and once caught, you can destroy or relocate them far away. Use our LT5518RD for squirrels; the LT3310 for mice or chipmunks.
