Living in MN, I have wasps nesting in the gunwales of my boat. Is there a product I could tuck up inside the boat to keep them out? To get them out, I’m thinking a tarp and bug bomb or a tarp and mosquito coil in a metal pan. Any other ideas?
No doubt wasps love nesting in boats. This happens because most any boat is close to water and the typical boat design includes all kinds of voids, gaps and seams which is ideal for wasp nests.
To stop the invasion, you have a couple of options.
No doubt you can tarp the boat and set up MOSQUITO COILS underneath. But is this a practical solution? I think not. Mosquito coils need to be burned and since they’re only good for short while, you’ll have to constantly renew the treatment. This will lead to excessive costs and a lot of work.
But as a boat owner myself, I can tell you what I use. Its highly effective, easy to deploy and ideal for any boat.
A few years ago a product came to market that’s quite unique. The main reason is that it uses an active which is slow to work. Known as PHANTOM, this product is not a contact killer. In fact, as its name suggest, its undetectable by insects. Even if you spray insects directly, they will not notice it nor will they be impacted. At least not initially.
But 2-3 days after being exposed, they’ll die. And since Phantom can be transferred from one insect to another, it can be used to effectively manage both solitary insects and communal pests (like ants).
And there are two other important features of Phantom making it ideal for use on boats.
As you probably know, most any aerosol pesticide goes on wet and greasy. But not Phantom. Its unique formulation goes on “dry”. I know because I use it all the time. A light misting around my boat works at controlling any insect. And I can accomplish this goal with no mess.
Like you, I find the wasps love nesting on my boat. But so do spiders and occasionally, ants. Fortunately Phantom takes care of all these pests no problem.
Another benefit of Phantom is that its odorless. This means I can use it anytime and not have to worry about irritating odor, dry time or greasy mess.
I typically treat every 2 weeks to keep pests under control. And I start in the spring, around March or April here in GA, and I’ll keep using it through the summer and well into September or October.
In summary, I suggest you go with the Phantom. It has all the features a boat owner needs and its both easy and cost effective as well.
