VARIED CARPET BEETLE TRAP

VARIED CARPET BEETLE TRAP

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:   Glue trap which uses sexual pheromones as attractants and is set out where you either have activity or suspect activity. Emerging adults will find the trap, enter and get stuck on the glue catching them before they are able to mate and lay eggs.

This is an excellent monitoring device which should be used in conjunction with the other treatments listed in our on line article. These traps come in two styles. The one on the left side of the picture is the Low Profile and the trap on the right side of the picture is the Hanging Style.

Remember these are not a “solve all” device  and when used by themselves will not take care of a local infestation. And since developing stages can take several months before they’ll reach maturity, it’s not possible to tell when they’ll be attracted to pheromone traps. So when carpet beetles have been found active in the home and you want to use traps, here are some guidelines on how to set them up and what to expect.

1) Make sure you set them up as explained in our video posted below.
2) Be sure to have at least one trap installed per room where activity has been seen.
3) Understand that just because you see beetles it does not mean they will be attracted to the trap right after you set them out. There are far too many factors to determine just when this will happen. In general, there will be at least one “season” per year when this will happen and though outside this will usually be in the summer, inside the home it can happen most any time.
4) Carpet beetle traps should not be used as the sole control mechanism. In other words, using nothing but traps will not resolve, control or take care of an active infestation. The traps should be used as a way to both monitor and reduce local populations but not as a “treatment”.

WHERE TO USE IT:  In closets, around furniture, by important fabric, around windows or any place where you have either seen activity or don’t want to have any activity.

RATE OF APPLICATION:   Try to set at least one out in every room where you want to protect furniture or fabric; more if there is a lot of activity present.  The glue in the traps will remain active for 3-6 months and the pheromone will remain active during this time too. Each trap comes with 1 lure.

    Hi,

    Just a few questions-

    1) How long does the pheromone last, before needing replacement?

    2) How long will the trap store unused?

    Thanks,
    -Tom

      Tom,

In general, the lure will remain active 3 months, but it can be longer. If you set it out and capture beetles for a few months but at some point observe adults in the vicinity seemingly uninterested in going on or in the trap, it would be a sign the lure is losing its potency. So after 90 days, swapping out for a new trap is advised to ensure you have the best results.

      @C. Farmer:
      C.,

Since the pheromone used for this trap is collected and derived from varied carpet beetles, the general “name” is exactly that: “varied carpet beetle pheromone”.

How many lures are in each order? Is there just 1 lure and glue trap for $16? Thank you.

      Summer,

Correct. There is one lure per trap. Traps will remain active for 3-6 months.

Thanks for the earlier answer. I have 2 additional questions:
    1) Does one need to be concerned that a lure will attract the beetles to an area and the possibility of them spreading in that area?
    2) If both varied and black carpet beetles have been found, but there is a known issue for varied beetles, do both traps need to be put out?

    Thank you.

      Summer,

      1) No. Traps are used to let you know there is a problem. And any beetles drawn to the area would be drawn to the trap. They wouldn’t go there and then ignore the trap. But again, as our article explains, traps are not “controlling” anything so at best, they’ll only collect a few in the structure anyway, not all of them. Eggs and larvae in the structure still need to be treated if you wish to end the infestation.

      2) If you have either, using traps should only be installed to help alert you to new areas you didn’t realize had a problem. And since the treatment for one works on both, why install any? Just treat the whole structure and get rid of them. In other words, if you have one type you need to treat but what advantage do you get knowing you have both? They infest the same areas, require the same treatment, etc. so there is no benefit and if anything, assuming you have both is the way to start. And if you go with that assumption, there is no need to use the traps anyway if you do a thorough application and knock them out. Now maybe a month or two later you can set out a trap of each just to see. But to start, I’d be focusing on the treatments and thinking about traps at the end of the process.

    Hi Bugspray.com,

I’m in Southern California. Are varied carpet beetles in California similar enough to the carpet beetles used to make the pheromone, that it will work here?

The carpet beetles (adults and larvae) I’ve found look most like the varied (not black, not furniture), but they aren’t a perfect match. This makes me think there might be regional variations.

    Thanks,
    Patty

      Patty,

The pheromone will work on any varied carpet beetle. The manufacturer distributes it worldwide and has assured us it would work when we inquired many years ago. Since that time we’ve been selling it worldwide and have had nothing but positive results reported. Keep in mind traps are a way to “control” a pest. Their purpose is to monitor any given area so you are able to determine if you have a problem, how bad the problem will be, etc. But if you say you already have the beetles active, our best advice is always to treat using our products detailed in our article here:

      Carpet Beetles: http://www.bugspray.com/articles98/carpetbeetle.html

True, traps might catch some. But the it won’t catch them all and just a few left to lay eggs elsewhere can allow problems to go on and on which means lots of damage to the infested fabric where larvae will be feeding.
