what can I spray for mosquitoes?

April 22, 2026 By Tech Support 2 Comments

I have a small yard and want to spray for mosquitoes. I see some people fogging but that seems a bit complicated. I have bushes on two sides that goes to a natural wild area and then a fence on the third side. My front yard is very sunny and not really a problem. My whole lot is about 1/4 acre so I have maybe 5000 sq/ft to spray? What would you suggest? You helped me with roaches and ants and some squirrels too. Let me know. They haven’t started yet but we’re about to get some hot temperatures and I know they’re coming!

Mosquitoes will be naturally drawn to shady areas of the yard and where there is moisture. For most homeowners, this will be their back yard.

Additionally, any overgrown wild areas that border your land will usually be a big entry point. This is especially pronounced if that border has bushes, mulch areas, vines or other ground cover.

Lastly, any shady side of the home – especially if it has an AC unit there – will usually hold mosquitoes. They also like to rest under decks if they’re built low to the ground so you’ll need to treat there too.

Here in GA, we have the Asian Tiger Mosquito which is active most any time of the day. They’re about to start up as we get to May. They’re typically active from late morning right up to midnight and  they’re the most common one infesting the yards around Atlanta. At this time they can be found in over 20 states – mostly on the eastern seaboard up to CT – but they’re common in most all of CA, AZ, TX, LA, FL and up to OK, MO and KY.

To keep your yard mosquito free, 1/6 oz of MAXXTHOR EC per 1,000 sq/ft feet so about 1 oz per treatment should work fine. Add 1 oz to our 6 GALLON HOSE END SPRAYER, hook it to your hose, and plan on getting up to 5,000 sq/ft of coverage.

MAXXTHOR EC

Plan on spraying every 2 weeks so they don’t return. And treat in the evening, right before dark, to get the best overall results.

Maxxthor EC goes a long way since you only need 1/3 oz per gallon but it does have a slight odor. So if you want something that’s odorless, go with MAXXTHOR SC. It uses the same active but is more refined so it can actually be used inside too (Maxxthor EC is for outside treatments only).

Maxxthor SC will work just as well for Mosquitoes BUT you’ll need to use a full 1 oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq/ft. So if you get our 6 gallon Hose End, plan on adding 6 oz to the sprayer before filling it with water to get up to 6,000 sq/ft of coverage.

The good thing about Maxxthor SC is that you can spray just a few hours before guests come over and they won’t know you treated. That said, it’s generally best to treat in the afternoon or evening.

Now if you’re yard is bigger than 10,000 sq/ft (1/4 acre), we recommend using our BUGSPRAY FOGGER to treat. It will prove more efficient because it can take a single gallon of mixed solution and cover up to 5,000 sq/ft effectively. Plus it will save time. Check the video out:

If you decide to get our Fogger, you won’t be able to fog with Maxxthor EC (it’s not labeled for fogging). That said, you could use Maxxthor SC or better yet, BITHOR SC.

Bithor contains two actives; one like Maxxthor but a second one which provides long term protection. Bithor is odorless, highly effective on most any pest and can be used inside too.

Plan on using 1 oz per gallon per 5,000 sq/ft when fogging.

BITHOR SC

In summary, your yard is small enough to where you could effectively use our Hose End sprayer and Maxxthor to spray all the foliage 1-2 a month and keep the yard mosquito free. But if you wanted to save time/money in the long run, get the Bugspray Fogger and use Bithor. The fogger allows you to apply a whole gallon in less than 5 minutes and it covers up to 5,000 sq/ft so overall, you use less chemical, get better results and save time.
