What can I use on Orthosoma brunneum Brown Prionid (Brown Beetle), that I found in my house. I had a few plumbing leaks. I fixed the leaks. I am in Northern Ohio.
The Orthosoma Brown Beetle is a longhorn boring beetle drawn to decaying wood. They exist outside in most all states and will be drawn to firewood piles, damaged homes where wood siding or shakes are full of moisture and in some cases, inside homes where decay can be “smelled” from afar.
You don’t cite the wood where they are active but there are two products that can be used in the home for quick control of this pest given one of the two reasons they might still be active.
Assuming you’ve “fixed” the leaks, that does not mean the surrounding wood no longer has the “decay” odor known to draw this pest. And if it does OR if some adults got to the rotting wood and laid eggs before the leak was fixed, offspring probably fed (and would still be feeding) in it and causing damage. For this reason, any wood in the area of the leak should be treated with FS MP AEROSOL.
And if you are finding what we call exit holes in any wood? Spray it into these holes along with adding some drilled holes close by.
If you don’t see any holes in the surrounding areas where the leak was active? Drill some 7/64th holes and inject the FS MP to ensure nothing is living in it.
Solid wood without damage will not accept much FS MP but if you hit a bored out gallery? It will readily accept the spray and the more you pump the better. Treat these for 8-10 seconds to ensure you reach and kill any still active or pupating in the cavity.
If the beetles are randomly appearing around the home? You could opt to spray the FS MP under the baseboards or into any crack or crevice you suspect they might be using. Since they typically seek such places to hide, you could get the bulk of them in the home.
But a better approach would be to apply a mixed gallon of BITHOR to every 1,000 sq/ft of carpet, area rugs, baseboards, etc.
Bithor is odorless, long lasting, great for use in crawl spaces or attics or living spaces for a wide range of insects including longhorn borers.
A thorough application would eradicate any wandering around looking for a place to nest and lay eggs. The Bithor would also kill off any entering the home in case they’re coming from some exterior source like firewood or trees close to the home.
To treat baseboards, carpeting and the homes exterior, add 1.5 oz of the Bithor in a gallon of water and use a good PUMP SPRAYER to get it applied. Retreat every 2 weeks until you’re not seeing any new or ongoing insects in the home or on the homes siding.
If the wood of the home is infested, you will need to drill and treat with the FS MP. But if you’re lucky, these are just adults randomly foraging for a good place to lay eggs and if that’s true, don’t give them the chance. Get the Bithor applied and knock them out for good.
