I live on a cattle farm in Southeast Georgia. We spread chicken litter on the pastures annually as fertilizer. About a week or two after the litter is spread we get these little, hard shell, black bugs that look like some kind of beetle. They infest our house inside and out for months. What kind of bugs are these and what could I spray or use as a perimeter treatment outside that might help keep them from invading my house?
No doubt these are DUNG BEETLES. They’re attracted to the manure and are probably eating enough to affect the overall benefit you normally would get from your applications. Depending on how many you have, I suggest you reduce some of the population by treating with the BIFEN XTS we have listed in our article. This will keep their local numbers in check and in turn allow the manure to make it back to the soil where your crops will benefit.
For the home, go with the CYPERMETHRIN and PHANTOM. The outside treatments should keep them off the home and the Phantom used inside should eliminate any that make to the living spaces.
