Hello, We live in Georgia about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta. Yesterday a coyote killed our dog Max a 12 lb shih tzu that was our life. He was just 9 years old. He had a vocabulary of almost 30 words and by that I mean he could understand and respond to each word individually and he could problem solve as well. This was the most intelligent animal I have ever seen. I am sure I don’t have to describe the scene to you. We are inconsolable at this point. I have spent the past day scouring the internet and found your site. I have read that all opinions ranging from its nearly impossible to live catch a coyote to it can be done if you do it the right way.
My questions are: 1) What size trap would be the correct size meaning I want it to be big enough so the coyote feels less apprehension about entering the cage. 2) What do you recommend for bait / lure?
We have an acre with homes on the east and west side and a street to the north but the back of the lot backs up to open county land and two forest standings and a 30 acre farm across the way. This is where I am sure the coyote came from. We have been here 20 years and always had a dog and have tied out our dogs during the day for almost all of that 20 years. We have never heard of Coyote’s in Georgia and were painfully unaware that they are now an issue in suburban areas. This is what makes what happened so unacceptable that this innocent sweet soul was brutalized. Any advice would be welcome & thank you for your time. Sincerely, Mike
No doubt coyotes are a menace here in GA. I do a lot of fishing and in the magazines I read, there are 2-3 articles every year detailing coyote attacks on deer, pets and recently, people. They seem to be quite comfortable living in urban areas and are seemingly more bold now then ever.
Over the years we have helped many people live trap coyote. Details on how to make a set can be read in our COYOTE article but the most common trap for this purpose is our LT152248RD w/LIVE BAIT CAGE (this is the trap used to catch the coyote in the picture).
This trap has proven effective for coyote, fox, bobcat and badger. Basically any predatory animal can be tempted if you bait the trap with a live rodent or bird. I suggest a rat or squirrel since they can be live trapped on most any property using one of our LT5516 TRAPS.
