The last few weeks we have noticed a skunk smell in our house. We have checked under the house but no smell there. We have noticed it upon entering the house after we’re gone, or at night when inside the house. We have a large multilevel deck of 2000 sq feet so its hard to see all the way under it. But we do smell the odor there also. Is there a treatment of some sort that could be used in a fogger to try to get them to leave? There is no way to get under the deck to find where they might be. Thank you for any help.
Skunks love living under low lying decks. Now you didn’t state your deck is low to the ground but you mentioned its hard to see under it so I’m going to guess its built low. If so, it would be a prime place for a skunk (or skunks) to find and use for nesting.
Skunks also like to live close to food. And they love pet food. Cat or dog food is one of their favorites so by any chance do you or any nearby neighbors feed pets outside? That would be another good reason for them to want to be around.
So what options do you have to get rid of the smell? Fortunately there is a way to remove the odor. We have a few that will work but the best is T.O.N. It can be used as a liquid or a mist. Basically if you’re able to reach all the areas with a PUMP SPRAYER , one can be used for the job. Just be sure you get all surfaces because missing just 1-2 spots will allow the odor to persist.
Mix 4 oz of T.O.N. per gallon of water and apply the mixture over an area no larger than 500 sq/ft. Expect fast results; usually within a few hours the odor will be gone. But if the skunk keeps using the area, you’ll have to treat on a regular basis to keep the odor low; maybe 1-2 a month depending on how many are using the area.

Now if you have a good 1-2 foot open area under the deck, using our BUGSPRAY FOGGER will make the job a lot easier. You can either buy a model (keep it to fog for mosquitoes and other pests during the warm season).
Lastly, if there is food close by, the residing skunk is not likely to leave. And though the T.O.N. will keep the odor low for 2-4 weeks, you will most likely have to use it on a regular basis unless you permanently remove the skunk. Generally this can be done using one of the traps listed in our SKUNK CONTROL article. Once caught, you should be able to contact your local animal control center (most all counties have them around the country) and they’ll come by and take it away. Alternatively you can relocate it at least 10 miles away to make sure it doesn’t return. We have one trap with a “cover” that’s ideally suited for trapping skunk. Its featured on this product page:
