The past two weeks we are seeing springtails invading! They’re coming through the front side of the home. I see them outside at night after dark too and now they’re coming through the siding and out in our dining room and kitchen. How do they get in so fast? This home is 11 years old and this is the first time I’ve seen them inside. I did look at your maxxthor spray for outside and plan on getting it but will that control the ones I’m seeing inside or do i need to spray there too?
So in our SPRINGTAIL ARTICLE, we explain that springtails are not capable of moving great distances at one time. And in general, any you see will be living within 2-4 feet of where you see them. That means the ones on the siding are living under the siding or at least in safe cracks and crevices they’ve found. And the ones inside? They’re living under your BASEBOARDS.
BEST WAY TO TREAT A BASEBOARD AND WALL VOID FOR INSECT PESTS
Both of these locations are ideal for springtails because they feed on mold, algae and other things that grows on wood or cement. If your home is brick, they won’t nest out in the open but they will thrive along fascia boards/gutters as well as on decks, around doors and under cement pads like driveways, walkways and stoops. But if you have vinyl, cedar shakes or stucco, they’ll thrive behind it and from there, migrate to under baseboards and inside living areas.
HOW TO TREAT HOME SIDING FOR SPRINGTAILS AND OTHER PESTS | BUGSPRAY
As natures most important recyclers, springtails will try to live anywhere on wood or cement and will not want to come out into the open. But when it’s mating season (spring-summer-fall), males will forage “out” into the open, leave sperm deposits for females and then retreat home. Females will then attempt to find the sperm and set up a new nest but can only travel 5-6 feet from a nest or else risk their lives. So if they go out more than 4-5 feet and don’t find adequate shelter, they will die. But if they do, they’ll form what we call “pocket nests”.
So for your home, they’ve been in these locations for several years. The only reason you’re seeing them now is because the one’s nesting have only recently grown in population enough to come out and look for new places to live.
