I have a neighbor with 5 big dogs. We live in a subdivision with 100 ft lots. They don’t pick up the poop. The flys invade us on our deck. Is there anything that I can use spray so they will stay a way?
Ideally treating their yard – especially the piles of poo – would eliminate the issue. But it’s not your yard so we understand this is not possible. That said, you can effectively repel most flying insects. And flies are especially good at detecting scent they do not like.
So what works good for repelling flies? There are two options. One is based on smell people can detect and the other is based more on the chemical which is inherently repellent to flies.
The first choice is PEST AWAY. Mix 2 oz per gallon and use it along the property line. If you have hedges, bushes, trees or a fence, these are the things you’ll want spray. The mixture will soak into these objects and the scent will slowing release into the air. If there is no breeze, the immediate area will serve as an invisible wall the flies will avoid. And most flies that are attracted to dog poo will not be targeting people so there will be no reason for them to come to your yard.
The second option is MAXXTHOR SC. This is actually odorless but the active ingredient will be easy for them to detect and avoid. Just like the Pest Away, it will slowly release into the air and if you saturate the property border, they will prefer to stay on their side and not cross over. Flies do not fly too high, 10 feet or less, so no need to spray the tops of any trees you might have. But a fence would be ideal to treat.
Treatments can be done with a standard PUMP SPRAYER but a BUGSPRAY FOGGER will use 75% less mixture to treat the same area and it will save time. I use the Maxxthor and that same fogger to treat the shrubs and mulch around our front porch for mosquito control and it takes 5 minutes to apply a gallon. Treatments last 10-14 days and I would expect nearly the same result for your yard. The sun is the big enemy here meaning if there is strong sun, treatments may only last 7-10 days. But if it’s shady, treatments will last 10-14 days.
Pest Away will last longer but again, every yard is different and the length of how long treatments last depend on the environment as well as how many flies are being generated in their yard. Obviously the more the harder it will be. But these two options work; we just don’t know if you’ll get 7-10 days of control or 15-20 days.
