I have neighbors with roaches and don’t want them! They aren’t doing anything and we have to do our own treatments since the management will only have service in our hallways and laundry room. Does this mean I will get them? I read your roach article and want to do something but is it realistic to think I won’t get some? Please help!
This is one of the rare times when we can say with any confidence that partially treating can actually work – at least for the resident doing the treatments. In the world of pest control, it’s very rare that we (professionals) recommend treating single rooms or parts of a structure. This is true whether the structure has a problem with ants, roaches, termites, rats, etc.
The reason we don’t recommend partial treatments is because most insect (and animal) pests tend to avoid where they find regular, over the counter treatments. These products are almost always counter productive; they’re highly repellent which means they tend to scatter pests. When used in a one family residence, pests will merely move to the untreated areas.
But if you live in a condo/townhouse with 2 or more connected units, things change. In other words, your structure actually works to your advantage. And if you’re in an apartment building with hundreds of units? Using the right products in the right areas can have a profound impact and really help you even though you may be the only one taking action.
Now to answer your question; roaches may only be insects but they are still wild and so very much unpredictable. That means just like a squirrel, rat, mosquito or fly that could randomly appear anywhere, anytime, so too could a rogue roach. This also means we can’t say with 100% certainty that our recommended treatments will keep your living area 100% pest free 100% of the time. But if you’re taking action using the products we recommend, you will be way ahead of every other resident. This also means the odds of pests wanting to use your apartment will be on the low to none side compared to everywhere else in the structure.
So what then are the best options?
Repellents. The best two are made with all natural oils like cinnamon and peppermint oil. And don’t stop there. Electric outlets and Air Vents are common routes of entry between apartments as are any holes around water pipes. Get these areas treated with XEMPT DUST. It’s not affected by moisture and will last over a year and bugs can’t live or pass through it with any comfort so its a great product for keeping pests from using these pathways into your living space.
