How much surflan pro should I mix into a 2 gal sprayer for standard yard coverage ?
SURFLAN and Surflan Pro both contain the same 40% active and for the most part, have identical labels. And as you’ll find with many herbicides, their rate of application is based on square footage – not “standard yard coverage”. That means you’ll need to measure the area you want to protect and once you know the square footage, you’ll be able to determine how much material will be needed. To better explain, here’s an example.
Lets say you have a area that measures 5,000 sq/ft. If you review the Surflan or Suflan Pro label, you’ll see there is a “variable” rate of use with a range of 1.5 – 3.0 oz of active for every 1,000 sq/ft of turf. Basically the longer residual action from the treatment you desire, the higher rate of mixing should be used. Here’s a summary of these rates:
1.5 oz per gallon per 1,000 sq/ft will prevent weed growth for 2-4 months.
2.2 oz per gallon per 1,000 sq/ft will prevent weed growth for 3-6 months.
3.0 oz per gallon per 1,000 sq/ft will prevent weed growth for 4-8 months.
So in my example, if you reside in a southern region and would like to protect your 5,000 sq/ft for as long as possible given the extended growing season, you would want to apply 15 oz of Surflan over the 5,000 sq/ft area. As for how much water would be needed? This isn’t nearly as important but the range would be 1-2 gallons of mixed material per 1,000 sq/ft. So using your 2 gallon sprayer, you could add 6 oz of Surflan and treat up to 2,000 sq/ft or add just 3 oz to the 2 gallons of water and only treat 1,000 sq/ft. In some cases using more water is helpful – especially if the turf is really dry. The point is that the treatment is not about how much water you use but rather how much concentrate you use per 1,000 sq/ft.
Now if you reside in a northern zone where the growing season is abbreviated, the lesser rate would probably suffice. And at 1.5 oz per 1000 sq/ft, you would need just 7.5 oz of Surflan to get this same 5,000 sq/ft yard treated.
In summary, you’ll need to get a measurement of the yard you intend on treating and once you know the square footage, you should be able to figure out how much material will be needed, how many gallons of water you’ll need, etc. But if you need further help, email or give us a call and we should be able to further assist.
