I have been having a serious problem with biting gnats in my den area when I am working at my computer..They get into my hair on the left side and bite, making my ear burn and get red. I have gone on line and also talked to the Extension office here and have tried everything they recommended from cider vinegar in little dishes …to spraying vanilla…using sticky fly ribbon and it does work. Is there anything you can suggest as this is extremely annoying and painful. Thanks for your help.
Gnats can definitely be a problem in the home – especially during the winter months. Fortunately they are easy to control using any of the methods listed in our GNAT CONTROL article.
As you’ll learn in the article, the simplest approach is to manually space spray any room with activity using PT-565. This is a pyrethrin based aerosol that works well on any flying pest. It can be used as frequently as you want meaning you can use it several times a day without presenting any kind of hazard to you or others.
An easier option is to install AEROSOL MACHINES in any room with activity. These small devices will do the work for you; basically they release a small amount of product every 15 minutes around the clock. This way you don’t have to worry so much about having to constantly treat; the machine will be doing it for you all day and night keeping flying insects under control.
Each machine can protect up to 400 sq/ft so for the average home, 3-5 machines will be needed.
Equip each with a can of CLEAR ZONE. This pyrethrin based aerosol is very much like the 565 so it won’t last long once applied. But because the machine is releasing small amounts every 15 minutes, there will always be active ingredient in the air killing newly hatched adults all day and night.
