what to spray for a hidden yellow jacket nest?

September 7, 2024 By Tech Support Leave a Comment

Yellow Jacket ground nest under a bushI was working in the yard and got stung by yellow jackets. they’re going under my bush but i can’t tell for sure where the hole is. tons of them all the time and they’re mad as heck. how can I get this treated? pest control wants $300 and they’re not sure it will work right away so they might have come back? what do you suggest?

Are you sure you can’t see the hole? I ask because Yellow jacket nests in the ground where you can see it is easy to treat. If can figure that out, get a pint of our MAXXTHOR EC and some BOOST. Add 1/2 oz of Maxxthor to a gallon of water (if the hole is big, use a bucket to “pour” the mixture in). Do the treatment right after dark so they will all be in the nest. One gallon will usually be more than enough to eliminate the nest immediately so that the next day, there will be little to no activity. A good pump sprayer should deliver the mixture fast enough but the bucket method is ideal if possible. Now if are still finding some hovering around the next day, let it sit one more day and if they’re still active at the end of that second day, drench it again with another mixed gallon.

But if you definitely can’t find the hole? Then your best option is clearly PROTHOR.

Prothor is the exact opposite of Maxxthor. It’s non-repelling and basically undetectable by insects. This means they won’t know it’s there and so they will readily move over the bush, grass and dirt you spray unknowingly picking some up. They will then carry it down into their nest which will in turn kill all of them.

Use a good PUMP SPRAYER to drench the area where you see them most active. And you can do this close to dark. Just be sure to dress in long sleeves and pants, wear a hat and goggles along with gloves for protection. If you dress up like this, you should be able to walk right up to the nest, nice and slow, without getting them mad.

Here is a short video showing a treatment done in tall grass where there were hundreds of yellow jackets every day. But after just one treatment, they all died.

Now one thing you need to do is to be sure your pump sprayer is nice and clean. If it was used for some weed killer or most any other bug killer, there would likely be trace amounts of the last used spray unless you rinse it a few times AND pump a good quart or more of clear water through it. Using a dirty sprayer would almost certainly mean they’ll detect the mixture and this is likely to get them irritated.

So once the solution is mixed and ready, spray the entire gallon on the bottom of the bush where you are confident they’re all going. And be sure to soak it heavy.

Do this for 3 evenings in a row, right after sunset, so they’ll be moving through a “fresh” treatment every following day. This formulation you’ll be spraying they will not detect and so they won’t know to leave. Within 3-4 days the nest will be dead.
