Hello, I have noticed some small moths in my room where there are animal/taxidermy mounts. What is the best way to keep these insects from damaging my mounts? I was thinking of spraying the mounts that I can get to but some are high on the wall and wondered if a fogging can spray would help? Plus moth glue traps set out on a regular basis to aid in keeping them ” at bay”. Please email me back with advice, thank you.
Seeing a few moths in your trophy room is reason to be concerned. Clothing Moths and Case Making Moths will readily infest mounted animals like deer and the damage they do can be devastating.
Clearly this pest can do significant damage if left unattended so for now, I suggest you take some time to inspect all mounts – even if it means climbing a ladder. This is usually the only way to insure you don’t miss something.
Now while you’re inspecting them, it would be a good time to treat. And if you don’t find any insect activity, MULTIPURPOSE INSECT KILLER would be a good product to apply. Lightly mist the mount by moving the can around it like one would do if they were spraying hair spray or spray paint. It should only take 20-30 seconds to get them completely covered and the treatment should last 1-2 months.
The aerosol particle size is small and will typically penetrate most fur well which is important since the bulk of the insects will be focused on the hide surface where the fur attaches.
Multipurpose Insect Killer is labeled for use on dogs for fleas and ticks so its gentle on fur. And its water based so it won’t stain carpets or furniture either. Use quarterly for constant protection of all valuables.
FOR LARGE PROBLEMS OR AREAS USE BITHOR
If you have several mounts to treat or plan on doing a complete application, go with BITHOR.
This odorless formulation includes a fast working adulticide that will kill off active adults and larvae within a day. A few days later, this wears away and the second active will remain for 2-3 months working on hatching eggs.
Bithor is safe enough for use on all furniture, carpeting, etc. and should be applied throughout the home to make sure the problem doesn’t relocate.
The following “short video” (less than 60 seconds long) gives a good explanation of just how safe Bithor is to use in the home.
Bithor is odorless so easy to work with and you can apply it using a good PUMP SPRAYER although using our MINI MISTER is the best way to use it.
Add 1 oz per gallon of water and expect to get about 1000 sq/ft when using a pump sprayer. When using our Mini Mister, add 1/2 oz of Bithor to the 12 oz tank and plan on getting about 250 sq/ft of coverage per tank ful.
The Mini Mister is the best way to apply Bithor.
The following “short video” (less than 60 seconds long) shows how the Mini Mister works for use in the home.
The light aerosol mist will deliver the perfect spray without making a mess.
Use a good PUMP SPRAYER when treating baseboards, carpets and furniture.
For hard to reach mounts, get a WEBSTER. You can dip the head in the Bithor solution and then wipe down the mount for long term control.
These same poles can be used to for applying the Multipurpose Killer too. Simple attach an AEROSOL HOLDING TOP and the Multipurpose can be controlled from for the floor reaching up 10+ feet.
Lastly, setting out some MOTH TRAPS can be helpful. Since eggs could be elsewhere in the home, traps will serve as a kind of early warning system that alerts you a problem area that might need treatment.
Remember, clothing moths are secretive, avoid light and as a latent pest can cause substantial damage before they’re discovered. Traps will help by alerting you before things get out of hand.
