My sons sandy schoolyard is infested with thousands of nests. What products and tactics should I use? And should this only be done on August when there are no students around?
Sounds like DIGGER WASPS or CICADA KILLERS. Most of these will make solitary nests meaning just one female will be using each hole. But some species will commonly have multiple holes so one female may be using several nests. Regardless, you have two way of treating them.
The first is to apply 2-3 squirts of DRIONE DUST down each nest. After dusting, use a rock, wood chip or something native to the area to “seal” the hole. The dust will both kill the active adults and if you seal it good, it should last long enough to kill emerging eggs if they hatch in the near future. Use one of our HAND DUSTERS to apply the Drione.
The other option is to mix up ESSENTRIA IC and then pour 16-32 oz of the mixed solution down each hole. This will take a lot longer to do and will involve more material. But it will work. Like dusting, you should use a rock or wood chip to seal the hole after treating.
As for when to treat; definitely when children or pets aren’t around. But once the application is done and allowed to sit for 1-2 hours, pets and people can come back to the area with no hazard present (except maybe some surviving wasps that might still be flying around).
Now if you still have wasps active 7-10 days following your initial application, treat again. Based on how many nests you say you see, there is a good chance you will miss some your first attempt.
Lastly, expect some more nests to develop next year but the numbers should be greatly reduced. Just be sure to treat them the same way to insure they don’t repopulate to this level again as it will usually only take 1-2 years for them to rebound.
