ADONIS PROTHOR

Prothor SC 2
Prothor

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:     Odorless  concentrate classified as a “non repellent” which means insects won’t know its present where applied. This means you can use this active without spooking or chasing insects elsewhere. Designed for use inside and outside the home, Adonis is a good active for “communal” pests like termites, ants and most any garden or turf pest around the home like grubs and beetles.

WHERE TO USE IT:    Inside the home Adonis can be applied to structural members infested with wood destroying pests, wall voids and sub-slab for termite prevention. In the yard, treat the soil around the home as well as grass, mulch and gardens. Adonis can also be used as a systemic on trees and shrubs for long term control of wood boring pests and insects which target plant foliage.

RATE OF APPLICATION:     When spraying it out over grass or foliage, add  .3 to .6 oz per gallon of water.

When soil drenching shrubs and trees, use .1 – .2 oz per inch of tree diameter. 1-2 oz per 10″ of tree width. Add the chemical to a 5 gallon bucket filled with 3-4 gallons of water. Make 4-8 holes for every bucket you need to use so for a tree 20″ wide, you should use two buckets and 10-15 holes around the tree. Use a stake, something like rebar, to create holes 1-2 feet deep. The liquid should then be poured out over these holes slow enough so the holes will absorb the fluid evenly.

When treating for termites, mix 1 oz in 2 gallons of water and apply the 2 gallons of mixed solution to every 10 feet of foundation around the structure. Dig a small trench prior to treating to insure the material stays in place during the application. Retreat every 5 years.

For flower beds, plant foliage and turf, .3 to .6 oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq/ft will control most pests.

When treating ants in the yard, add 2.5 oz to our 20 GALLON HOSE END SPRAYER and then fill the sprayer up to the 5 gallon line. Hook the sprayer to a garden hose and spray the entire tank over 5,000 sq/ft. Retreat monthly when ants are seen until they are gone. Once gone, treat every 2 months to ensure they do not return.

I was wondering if it would be possible to add this insecticide with Grazon Next, around May or June of next year to control acorn weevils. I would be spraying in open woods, mostly white oak trees, similar distances between trees like a park, 20-25′ apart. How much would I need to add to the tank since it will be rated for the output necessary for the herbicide, it will require higher volume output. Using a 55 gal. spray tank, PTO.

      David,

If you review our acorn weevil article, you’ll see that trees need to be “drenched” so the treatment will work via systemic action. Spraying the standard amount one might apply when spraying a herbicide like Grazon won’t do the trick. In other words, it won’t be enough nor will it be applied where needed. As our article explains, you’ll need to make holes and apply several gallons to every tree you want to protect. And the amount you’ll need per tree will vary based on the tree’s width. We cover this in our article here:

I have treated my Eugenia hedge in the past for leaf damage from white flys & or thrips. My neighbor told me to get what I need from your company affordably. I don’t like to use spray, but prefer liquid or powder I can mix and apply directly to soil around the plants.
    please advise. thank you

      Deb,

Protecting valuable plants from destructive pests is the the single best thing you can do to ensure they live long, healthy lives. Prothor can do this for you with very little effort. Its odorless, mixes with water easily and uses the same active found in Advantage used for pets. What’s interesting is that the % of active labeled for use directly on dogs is actually 20 times stronger compared to what you’ll be pouring into the ground. The point is its a much weaker formulation compared to what we use directly on our pets which means it will pose no hazard to the environments or people.

Now if you read our White Fly article, you will learn you can use Prothor as a surface spray as well as a soil drench. The rule her to follow is simple. If you have an active problem, first spray all the trees and shrubs you want to keep pest free. Next, apply the Prothor as a systemic. The surface spray will take effect in 2-3 days and keep your vegetation pest free for 3-4 weeks. This time will allow the systemic treatment to be absorbed by the plant so when the surface spray has worn away, the systemic will take over. Great thing about the systemic treatments is that they last for 6-12 months so you don’t have to spray any more. In most regions, soil drenching once a year will provide year long control. Read above for details on how much to use per tree or shrub.

You can order Prothor above or from our White Fly article will details how to use it safely and effectively:

Can I use this when watering indoor houseplants for a mealy bug infestation? I have about 65 houseplants and bought a different item at the time to use as a systemic to eradicate them for up to a year, but the directions look like they have changed since I purchased what was supposed to be just Adonis?

      Cheryl,

Prothor is the same exact material as the “no longer produced” Adonis and yes, its great for mealybugs. In fact its good for many pests that live in soil. Add 1/2 oz to any gallon of water used to water these plants and you can apply it to potted plants in or outside the home. Its odorless and will grow “into” the plants foliage effectively protecting it for months.

    Dear Team,
I just bought 1 Prothor today. I will use against thrips on my rose plants as a spray. What is your advise and experience regard my use of Prothor on roses against thrips?

      Oomesh,

Prothor is a very good option for controlling a range of pests that feed on plants since you can use it systemically. This means you can soil drench the roses and over time, the bushes will absorb the Prothor, distribute it to the plants foliage and leaves and then anything like aphids, white flies, mealy bugs, etc which attempt to eat the plant will then die. And since treatments will last 3-6 months, you will probably only need to use it twice a year.

Plan on adding .5 oz per gallon of water and using the whole gallon as a drench for every bush assuming they’re a few feet tall or wide. You can’t use too much meaning using more will allow the treatment to last longer and not hurt the plant. But using too little means you’ll need to treat more frequently. Now using the .5 oz in 2 gallons of water will be the same as using .5 oz in 1 gallon of water as long as you apply the whole mixed amount to one plant. Water is the carrier of the Prothor and you need this to get the product down to the roots.
